Man, the CGI in those NHL Guardians bits is atrocious. It was apparently in 2011? Looks like late 90s/early 2000s at best. Yikes.

You say that the proportion of super heroes who wears capes is low, however it’s still much higher than the proportion of the general public who wears them, making it natural to associate super heroes with capes.

I think what really hobbled the New52 from the beginning is that they focused on the wrong things. DC didn't really need a continuity reboot; they needed to reboot the way stories were told. Before New52, the focus was all on trade paperbacks, and that was still the case after the New52. Which obviously differs significantly from the way it was in the '60s and hell, even to some extent during the '90s, when writers and artists took pains to make sure new readers could pick up just about any comic and understand what was going on. Like, I got into X-Men during the '90s, the era that everyone seems to think is when the X books became impenetrable. Granted, I was a fan of the cartoon, so I came in knowing a lot of the characters, but I had no idea who say, Cable was. And yet, every issue he appeared in there was usually a flashback sequence or thought balloon or something that explained his powers and a simplified version of his backstory ("he's Cyclops' son from the future", there, that's all I needed to know). If DC and Marvel want new readers to get into their comics, there's your solution. Well, that and more done-in-ones and two/three-parters and less six issue arcs (obviously I'm not saying they should get rid of trades altogether! But personally I'd rather read a trade that collects three two-parters or two three-parters than one six issue arc, y'know?). Either that or try to break up those arcs into smaller stories. I mean, one of the most beloved extended arcs in Marvel history is the Dark Phoenix saga, which mostly consists of several two and three-parters across a year's worth of comics!

The first two heroes (out of five I know who wear a cape) are batman and superman. Who were really trope makers. Like, the definition of the polar opposites of heroes for their times. The others are Captain Marvel, Shazam and Red Tornado. But then I'm mostly a DC fan. Nearly everyone else I can think of has skin tight outfits but no capes.... Which is when I immediately start quoting Edna Mode. (also notably yes I know. Neither batman or Robin started with Capes. The original Batman was basically a DIC in a trenchcoat.)

7:41 to be fair I could do this after years of reading comics. I could tell who the artist was by the way they illustrated the characters. Most artists have a signature way of how they draw and very distinctive. Like Alex Ross and Jae Lee for example, it’s super obvious they did it, when you see their work.

I can only assume they wear capes because they don't know any tailors with access to a sewing machine, which would allow heavier tailored outer garments like coats or jackets. An unfortunate circumstance given their physically active profession where wearing cape presents a significant risk of entanglement, trip, choke & strangulation hazards. 🤔

There is a priceless panel where Steve Rogers was rebranded as Nomad. He had a cape. He tripped over it and ripped it off. The panel said, 'now Steve knew why Captain America was never given a cape'. I don't know why this panel has stuck with me. I mean 4 panels dedicated to showing the uselessness of a cape.

there's something you can do with the Canadien. a supervillain who absorbs power going berserk absorbing everyone just can't do it anymore and then he gives a speech, in french, with subtitles and gets punched halfway through it with a "i can't understand french and i can't read english! what the hell are you talking about?!" and he has to basically fight defensively against the absorbing enemy who still has the powers he had previously absorbed. draining normal humans just enhances the basic stats and that's why he did it when previously he would only drain those with powers because the effect was only temporary. its just how his intro sheet was worded, he's probably just an absorber type and somehow that makes it less interesting.

Neither Gwen or Norman are active characters within Amazing at the time, so you are left with the 'children' being angry at Peter for 'reasons.' Those two characters have to land because they are the conflict. And they just are nothing. Now, me, I came into Spider-Man long after Gwen had died, she's like Uncle Ben or Batman's parents. History that informs on the title character, but not someone I had much to care about, but this story did drag her character through the mud.

As a chemist the use of "molecular Adhesion" made me laugh so hard😂 The forces that make the particles of a solid object stick together are called cohesion not adhesion. He got so close yet still missed. What they describe his power like sounds like it would just make the object loose mass though. I swear, sometimes writers explain powers in an unnecessarily complicated and convoluted way.

It's quite similar in consept to Listen to me Marlon (2015) and might answer a few of your questions about Hergé's personal thoughts. It's in French tho, so good subtitles might be necessary. EDIT: Found it here on yt as Tintin & I (2003) with English subs.
